Mark Morton
The person you speak with is responsible for the work.
I have worked at the intersection of software engineering, product development, and business operations throughout my career. Since 2002, I have served as principal architect and lead developer for more than 200 custom applications spanning manufacturing, energy, healthcare, aviation, education, real estate, e-commerce, and consumer markets.
Clients bring me software that is important, complicated, or already in trouble. My role may begin with architecture and strategy, but I remain comfortable working directly in the code, databases, infrastructure, and integrations required to deliver the result.
Hands-on architecture and engineering leadership
My experience includes building and leading a 20-person software engineering organization with responsibility across software strategy, architecture, cloud infrastructure, DevOps, cybersecurity, quality assurance, and product delivery. I have architected cloud-native AWS and SaaS platforms, multi-tenant systems, distributed services, industrial IoT solutions, and complex SQL and NoSQL data environments.
I also architected an industrial SCADA ecosystem supporting device connectivity, telemetry collection, alarming, reporting, visualization, and operational analytics. That work required software to operate reliably across physical equipment, field operations, cloud infrastructure, and the people responsible for responding to real-world events.
Modernization and applied AI
Legacy modernization is not new to my work. I have led modernization initiatives intended to reduce technical debt, improve maintainability, and accelerate delivery while protecting the operational knowledge already embedded in mature systems.
My current work includes practical AI-assisted development, code generation, testing, debugging, documentation, retrieval-augmented generation, intelligent search, and analytics. I approach AI as an engineering capability that must produce a dependable business result—not as a reason to discard sound architecture or proven software.
Business and product perspective
Before and alongside hands-on development, I held leadership roles across enterprise software product management, operations, digital marketing, and worldwide demand generation. That experience includes leading an enterprise software marketing database initiative credited with more than $15 million in incremental revenue and helping drive 86% revenue growth while leading operations and product management for a software company.
This background changes how I approach development. I want to understand the market, workflow, financial consequence, user behavior, and operational constraint—not merely the requested feature.
Education and technical range
I hold an MBA and a Bachelor of Business Administration, along with graduate study in data science. My technical work has included PHP, Python, JavaScript, Go, C++, Rust, SQL, NoSQL, AWS, REST APIs, distributed systems, database architecture, industrial IoT, telemetry, and analytics.
