What I check before changing inherited code

I start with the source code, database, hosting, scheduled tasks, external services, and deployment process. I also need to know which business activities must continue working.

The first changes usually follow a backup and recovery check. Where tests are missing, I identify the important behavior to verify before an upgrade or refactor. A small bug fix and a full application takeover need different amounts of investigation.
