Decide which system owns the data

Before writing a connector, I establish where each record originates, which system can change it, and how updates should flow. That prevents two applications from silently overwriting each other.

The review also covers authentication, field mapping, timing, rate limits, and the business action that depends on the transfer.

What happens when a request fails?

A useful integration must handle retries without creating duplicate records. It needs logs that show which transaction failed, a way to reconcile partial work, and a clear notification when someone must intervene.

These checks matter for payments, inventory, and scheduled data feeds, where a successful HTTP response does not necessarily mean the business records agree.

Can you add integrations without replacing our application?

Often, yes. An API or background integration can extend an existing system. I first check what interfaces are available and whether the current code and data model can support the change.
